How Exercise Improves Depression

Updated: Sep 17, 2023

Its a real catch 22. When we are or feel depressed, the last thing we want to do is exercise. We don’t have energy for it and is definitely not in the mood for it.

Where the catch comes in, is that exercise is exactly what we need to do to improve our mood!

A very interesting fact about depression is that neuroscientists have noticed that the region in your brain that regulate your mood is smaller when you suffer from depression.

It blows my mind how amazingly our bodies are made. If you are depressed and you going to exercise, you physically help your brain to support nerve cell growth which improves your nerve cell connections and that relieves depression.

Exercising releases ‘feel good hormones’ called endorphins and serotonin, into your brain. It’s like a natural cannabis-like brain chemical. These chemicals will enhance your sense of well being.

A very nice add on is that exercise helps improve our memory and reduce anxiety. Exercise will improve your sleep, relieve your stress and increase your energy.

It’s absolutely amazing for me what a ‘no brainer’🤪 it is how amazing our bodies are. That we can do physical movements to improve how we feel and our brains cope.

That puts exercising on the top of my medication list 😉
